Urban
Terrain Module (UTM) using the Dynamic Interactive Virtual Environment
(DIVE):
The employment of fires and effects in an urban environment is by far
the most challenging for the JFO. The requirement to limit collateral
damage and non-combatant casualties places tremendous demands on the
observer and requires the highest level of technical and tactical skills.
The UTM provides a small-scale virtual environment for dismounted personnel
to call for and adjust fires and effects that enables potential joint
training using a virtual reality simulator. The UTM includes interchangeable
walls, high definition rear projection and photo-realistic urban cityscapes
populated with simulated controller-initiated computer graphic events.
The UTM allows the use of a wide range of military optical/range finding
equipment, which, when combined with live sets, props, directional
sound, and 4D effects, like wind, dust, lighting, explosions and room
temperature variations from 55°F to 110°F serve to fully immerse
the soldier in the rigors of combat like situations.
